Rivet does not possess overwhelming strength, exceptional speed or an expensive specialist combat system. Instead, it relies on solid fundamentals, dependable movement and the ability to compete in several different areas.

It can strike, grapple, defend takedowns and attack damaged locations without becoming dependent on one route to victory.

Rivet performs best when it remains disciplined, allows an opponent to expose a weakness and responds with simple, reliable actions. Its compact construction makes it difficult to knock down through ordinary strikes or barrier impacts, allowing it to stay balanced under pressure.

Its greatest limitation is tactical adaptation. Rivet can follow a good plan, but it may struggle when an unfamiliar opponent forces the fight in an unexpected direction.

SIGNATURE TRAIT

Compact Frame

Rivet’s inexpensive frame was designed around balance, stability and ease of repair rather than dramatic performance.

Its low centre of gravity and tightly arranged internal structure make it harder to knock down through ordinary strikes and barrier impacts. Rivet may not look impressive beside larger or more specialised fighters, but it is difficult to move cleanly once its feet are set.

Signature Technique — Targeted Counterattack

Rivet watches for damaged limbs, weakened armour and repeated movement patterns before committing to an attack.

Rather than forcing an immediate finish, it attempts to remain operational, frustrate the opponent and gradually turn existing damage into a larger tactical problem.

THE TEAM

MALIK OKAFOR

Malik Okafor spent years working around low-level amateur arenas, repairing damaged machines for teams that could not afford professional technical crews.

The work was inconsistent and badly paid. Repairs were usually performed under time pressure using second-hand parts, temporary reinforcement and whatever remained in the team’s budget.

Malik became skilled at deciding what genuinely needed to be fixed and what could survive one more fight.

Rivet came into his possession when its previous team collapsed under unpaid fees and debts. Malik was offered the robot instead of wages he was owed.

Accepting was not the sensible financial decision.

He did it anyway.

Malik rebuilt Rivet gradually, replacing the worst failures while preserving anything that remained dependable. He could not afford to turn Rivet into a powerful specialist, so he concentrated on balance, discipline and reliability.

Malik currently lives with his older sister, Adanna, and her teenage daughter. The arrangement was meant to be temporary, but it has lasted for years.

He contributes through repair work, household maintenance and helping care for his niece. Adanna cares about him but has little patience for his habit of investing scarce money in machines and competitions that may never provide a return.

His niece believes Rivet is extraordinary.

Adanna sees it as one reason Malik still sleeps in a converted storage room.

Malik wants Scrap Yard to provide enough money and recognition for him to reopen a proper workshop and stop depending on his sister.

He also fears that chasing that future through robot fighting may be the very thing keeping him trapped.

RIVET

Rivet began its career in inexpensive amateur arenas.

It was assembled using affordable components and standard combat systems. Nothing about its original construction was considered exceptional. It was expected to compete reliably, remain easy to repair and provide smaller arena promoters with a fighter they could afford to maintain.

That lack of specialisation became its greatest strength.

More powerful robots were often pushed until they broke. Faster machines disappeared when their expensive systems could no longer be replaced. Rivet continued entering fights, absorbing repairs and returning to competition.

It learned to box, grapple, defend and remain patient.

Rivet is calm, practical and experienced. It does not treat defeat as humiliation. It treats defeat as information that may improve the next performance.

That attitude occasionally frustrates Malik, who experiences every loss as a financial threat and every serious injury as a bill he may not be able to pay.

Rivet understands that its construction places limits on what it may eventually become.

It still wants to find those limits for itself.

Its first official Scrap Yard fight ended in defeat against Hay Maker, but Rivet recovered after a difficult opening Turn and won the second by attacking Hay Maker’s damaged right leg and right arm.

The final result was a loss.

Rivet nevertheless proved that it could adapt, survive pressure and compete against a more powerful specialist.

THE ROAD TO SCRAP YARD

Malik learned about Scrap Yard through mechanics and former competitors connected to the amateur fighting circuit.

He initially assumed the entry costs would place it beyond his reach. Robot tournaments promising opportunities for independent teams usually required expensive licences, specialised transport or technical standards designed around corporate competitors.

Scrap Yard was different.

The entry fee was deliberately low. Independent mechanics were welcome. Older fighters and machines built without major sponsors could apply.

Rivet’s long amateur history also meant that much of the technical assessment could be completed using existing records.

Adanna told Malik that entering was a terrible idea.

She had watched him lose money on arena work before and did not believe another competition would rescue him from the consequences of the previous ones.

Her daughter disagreed.

She quietly helped Malik complete parts of the application and insisted that Rivet deserved the chance.

Malik submitted the forms while still uncertain whether he was pursuing a genuine opportunity or repeating an old mistake.

THE TEST FIGHT

Rivet’s test opponent was a faster amateur robot with good movement but poor balance.

Malik recognised that attempting to match its speed would place Rivet at a disadvantage. He instructed Rivet to remain patient, protect its centre and wait for the opponent to overcommit.

The other machine attacked aggressively.

Rivet defended, gave ground and allowed it to build confidence.

When the opponent attempted another rushing attack, its weight moved too far ahead of its feet. Rivet stepped aside, caught the exposed frame and turned the mistake into a takedown.

Once the opponent reached the floor, Rivet established control and prevented it from recovering its position.

The assessors ended the test shortly afterwards.

The victory was not dramatic.

It was disciplined, controlled and exactly what Malik had planned.

The test convinced Malik that careful preparation might allow them to defeat teams with better equipment.

It also reinforced his belief that Rivet would remain competitive as long as he could give it the correct plan.

The victory does not count towards Rivet’s official league record.
